About Friends of Quelimane

Friends of Quelimane is a project with the main objective of helping people from Quelimane to learn English or improve their English language skills
We believed this is important given the geographical and cultural isolation of Zambezia
Being able to speak good English would allow the locals to have access to more and better-paid jobs, also outside of the country; would improve access to information, and in general will contribute to feeling more connected with the rest of the world
IVS’ volunteers will play a crucial and pioneering role in this sense, offering to a large and different public the opportunity of learning from a native speaker
The project has been conceived by the local partners together with IVS and it aims at addressing the needs of a variety of organisations, most of them (Casa Familia, Casa Esperança, Aldeia da Paz and Cadeia Civil) providing assistance to people with fewer opportunities
Thus, in a broader perspective, this project would have a great social impact.

Quelimane is the capital of the Province of Zambezia, one of the poorest in Mozambique
With a population of about 250,000 people
Quelimane is rather quiet and safe
The weather is particularly humid, a feature which makes feeling the heat even more: the average temperature is approximately 25 °C, with about 1346 mm of annual precipitation, concentrated mainly during the rainy season, which normally runs from November to April.

The idea of this project was born by the desire of offering the local community concrete chances to learn English with a native speaker as a teacher
In fact, considering that English-speaking countries surround Mozambique, acquiring a good level of English would open more opportunities to the local youth.

Project details:

Location: Mozambique, Africa
Duration: 3 months
Start/Finish: January 2019, can be repeated throughout the year
Program: Long-Term Volunteering (Part-Funded)

The main tasks of the volunteers are the following:

The project includes a variety of activities, to be implemented in different institutions, as follows:

Parlamento Juvenil - The organisation’s focus is to involve local youth is policy making and lobbying
They also promote youth involvement in cultural activities

Ponto de Encontro (Progetto Mozambico Onlus) - This is an educational/cultural centre, equipped with a library, a library for children, and an IT room
It offers courses of English language (basic level), French language, and IT
This organisation already hosts international volunteers for short-term placements
here classes of basic English are already offered, but this project is going to complement the current courses with an intermediate course and perhaps (depending on the demand) an advanced one as well
In addition, the volunteers will be involved in organising, coordinating, and implementing other activities, such as theatre in English language, debates in English language
This will widely depend on the volunteer’s skills and interests.

The volunteer will be offered the opportunity to take part in a reintegration programme for detainees
This aims at equipping the inmates with useful skills as well as involving them in social and cultural activities to fight isolation.

In all contexts, the volunteers are expected to be able to build and implement a coherent and progressive curriculum.

Parlamento Juvenil is going to organise a Portuguese course for the 2 volunteers, with 1-hour class four times a week for the length of their stay
The course will be provided by a member of PJ.

Among the leisure activities proposed, there is the trip to Zalala beach, 45 km from the city of Quelimane
In October, there is an important music festival going on there
